Rear Commodore Mutterings

Dear members,

Following the very successful appointment of Matilda Richardson as coach of our youth in the 420’s, I’m really pleased to announce that the training committee has secured Matilda’s services for the 2023/24 season to again trail the 420’s around the course to help improve their skills and knowledge. Our 420 fleet has grown to 8 and we are likely to have another one join us for next season. Obviously the coaching isn’t free and the training committee is seeking funding to help pay for Matilda’s services next season. This year we used the funds given by the Lions club (2.5k)to help support this program. The training committee firmly believe that the best way to engage and retain our youth is through coaching and we want to continue to build on the momentum moving forward but we also realise that funds must come from outside of club funds to justify this program. If you read this and feel you’d like to sponsor this program please contact me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. We are seeking $5k funding per year to continue this vital aspect of our club.

The club is an accredited Australian Sailing School and for many years we haven’t made the most of this accreditation. The training committee is looking to revive tackers courses for next year and give our accredited youth the opportunity to use their skills and give them a pathway to earn a few bucks and give the club the resources to gain avenues to new members. There is still much work to do in this space but we have made a pretty good start and we are confident that we can expand on our grass roots approach to training. If you’d like to help us source funds for our programs, please contact me on the above address.

Cheers, Mono.

Dredging

Dredging in the channel inside Martha Cove will commence on or about the 26th April. There will be a dredge in the channel inside from the Coast Guard boat down to the second set of pens. Pipes will be running out of the marina to pump the sand. There will also be some equipment in the rigging area for a short period of time. The dredging is expected to go on for a month but should not inhibit yachts entering and exiting the marina.

Off The Beach News

Peter was unable to submit his report this week for the enews, so I will have a go for him!

The weather was not on our side this week. Wind gusts of 35 knots made it very easy for Geoff to call racing off for the day. The juniors still had some onshore coaching from Matilda and then took off for a swim in the shore breaks. Some members were witness to an unfortunate incident when Zac Lowe fell into the water and landed head first onto a rock. Zac spend a few hours in the emergency department and received 6 stitches for his troubles. Zac is happily on the mend and is brewing an awesome scar just above his forehead.

If your were around the club over the weekend, you may have been lucky enough to catch up with the Thompson Family, who were back on Oz for a brief moment. Sadly the wind was not ideal for Owen to get back onto a sailboat, but that didn't stop him hitting the water for some long awaited salt on his skin. Karin and Scott got their fix of club life on Friday night and were treated to an amazing sunset that most of us take for granted. Thanks for the visit guys, we wish you a safe flight home to Switzerland.

A few of our juniors are off to the Victorian Youth State Championships this weekend in Sorrento. The club wish them all the best and look forward to Abbey Everett's review next week. For more information on this regatta, click here.

See you over the weekend, Fiona

Skipper & Crew Meeting

NEW DATE – Sunday 30 April 2023 – 10.00am at the club
We look forward to seeing you all at this meeting on Sunday 30 April, prior to the 1.00pm Club Championship Race.
Your attendance is very important as the focus will be to update you all on the new Sailor App.  The App will be implemented for all Keelboat Races through winter (in parallel with Top Yacht), and then ongoing into next summer season (replacing the Top Yacht system).
Like many other Apps, Sailor App is user friendly, and all skippers will be required to use the App when racing to:
  • enter a race (sign-on)
  • access the course number
  • get your individual boat’s countdown clock
  • update your boat/crew information
  • access results
The aim of this Skippers and Crew Meeting is to get you ‘up and running’ with the App and answer any questions, as we make this transition to a more streamlined racing system.  Further information (including the first step of downloading the App) will follow prior to the meeting.
