Off The Beach

Howdy OTB Gang and anyone else along for the ride, we are a fully inclusive club after all.

Well, after many weeks of patiently waiting, the Sailing Gods finally saw fit to bestow a perfect day for us! All week we were expecting fairly light winds around the 5-10 knot range, but come Sunday lunchtime we had a steady 10-15 offshore, flat-ish water and sunshine, lovely sunshine. After Saturday’s weather, I didn’t think we’d ever see the sun again! People must have read the omens because we had 30 SBSC starters plus a couple of visitors and it made for an awesome sight with everyone milling around the start line.

As we were still down a few races in the Red Dolphin series, Geoff made the call early to get three races in. And to keep things moving we had just three starts, with Div 3 going off first, Div 6 last and everyone else on one start in the middle. I gotta tell ya, it was quite daunting in a little old Sabre being surrounded by all the go fast boats jostling for front row. They take no prisoners that’s for sure!

As the day wore on, the breeze kept on building, with plenty of shifts and gusts to keep you working hard to gain a spot or two, or even just to keep out of the way of those A Class rockets! And just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, it did!
The wind took it up a notch for race three which had us all flying, with the reaches screaming (with delight, not with terror like the week before!) I saw Matt W and Abbey E flying up to the top mark in race three and I’m sure I saw clear air underneath them for most of the way. The only thing brighter than the sunshine was their ear to ear grins!

All too soon it was over but everyone took advantage of the ride home to eke out the most of the day for some last minute reaches back to the beach. Where else would you want to be? It was definitely the best day’s sail we’ve had this season and at the risk of being told off for not being inclusive - If you weren’t there, well it sucks to be you! Even the Giant Evil Clown behaved himself, well except for race one when he reached up and grabbed Murray M right on the start line. Murray said afterward that he’s used to being grabbed on the start line so he wasn’t fazed too much.

All in all, a great day was had by all and many thanks to the race team of Geoff and Deirdre (fabulous course guys) , the Three Musketeers Rob C, Simon H and Jamie F in Woodsy and Katrina M who was ably helped out by son Charlie , filling in for Alister in Sutherland.

Learn To Sail - Junior Training

Do you have a junior person that would love to learn how to sail? Why not come and see what all the fun is about. Come down to the club on Sunday morning from 9.30am with a spirit for adventure, a towel and a change of clothes and we’ll do the rest.

Your junior person will be welcomed by our team of trained sailors and matched up to the appropriate skill level. We have many classes of training boats available to try including Opti’s, RS Tera’s, and RS Quest’s!

Trying new things can be overwhelming for juniors. That’s why this program is a flexible learning environment with no pressure on your junior, we also encourages junior members to bring a friend, so it can be even more fun. Parents or guardians of the participants are required to stay in attendance for the duration of the program and may be asked to help move and wash boats with their juniors at the end.

Time: 9.30am - 11am weather depending

Age: 8yrs and above (must be able to swim)

Vale Anthony Lohman

We are saddened to advise members that Tony passed away on Sunday 3 December.

Tony has been an active member of the keelboat fraternity since the early days of racing at SBSC. He crewed on many of our fleet over the years including After Midnight, Aphrodite, Bushranger, E’toile, Jaslyn, L’etoile, Mr Bojangles, Tardis, Therapy, ToniK, Yknot and Tumi.

Tony had a love of sailing and our Club. We were very proud to honour Tony and his passion for Friday twilight racing with the inaugural Tony Lohman Perpetual Trophy Race on 13 October 2023. The trophy takes pride of place in the SBSC trophy cabinet and will be awarded annually to the winner of the opening Friday Twilight Pursuit race… ‘Tony’s Race’.

On behalf of all the members of SBSC, we pass on our sincere condolences to Tony’s family and friends.

New Members Afternoon

A group of new members enjoyed drinks and nibbles at the Club on Sunday afternoon while watching the OTB sailors battle the wind and waves to actually get "off the beach". They were welcomed to the Club by Ann Matheson and Chris Allan from the Social Committee and Fiona Lowe from the Executive Committee. The new members were keen to learn how to get involved with sailing or to become a volunteer and many stayed on to watch the keelboats race to the finish line. This was followed by Sunday Sounds with Blair Manie and Erin Cornell. Thanks to everyone who helped make the afternoon a success.

Off The Beach

Howdy OTB Gang.

Wow, what a day we had on Sunday. Forget about the fairy tales, this one was straight out of the Stephen King play book! Like watching one of his movies, it was both exciting and terrifying at the same time and just after the start you were wondering if it was really the right place to be. I know I spent a lot of time with my eyes shut and chills running down my spine, but that was just some of those huge waves breaking down the back of my wetsuit! There was also lots of screaming, and that was not only on the reaches, man were they fast! And just to complete the picture, in the third race, (yes, three races!) Duncan Mc was bearing down on Fiona M in one of those said reaches, when a giant, evil clown reached up out of the sea, grabbed him and dragged him under! Well that’s what it looked like to me anyway.

With a lot of our regular sailors away at the annual Cairn Curran Regatta, especially the 420’s, our numbers were way down on the week before’s thirty or so boats. Of the 12 that started, 9 were there at the end, and of those I think the gutsy award goes to Zac L and Glenn L in the Lasers, a really tough day at the office for those little round bottomed beasts (the boats people, the boats). I heard Glenn say he hadn’t worked that hard in 35 years! Another Stephen K mind bender was seeing Gingerbread Bill M roaring around in a Tasar, what is the world coming to? And just like coming out of one of those movies, once we were back on dry land and realised that the clown wasn’t coming after us, it was grins all round and a lot of back slapping for having made it through. What a brave bunch!

Apart from the ones that didn’t come out (for good reasons), the people I felt sorry for the most were Ross and Natasha M, who crewed on the RHIBs for the day and had to watch close hand all the action when I’m sure they would have loved those conditions and would have done nearly anything to swap places. Come to think of it, I think I might have seen a bit of red and white makeup on Ross back at the Club rooms. As a consolation prize, Ross and Greg Weston, one of our new RHIB drivers, did manage to rescue one of the keelboats that was in trouble with a down motor and taking on water, so some action for them after all.

Also on the RHIBs was Never Say No Norm K, who filled in at the last moment as he so often does. I know I say it over and over, but without these volunteers putting in each week, especially Wonder Geoff and Super Deirdre , who go out every week, way before the sailors do, sometimes to wait and wait in bad weather only to have to come back in without laying a mark. Please, please let them know how grateful you are.

Lastly this week, there has been a change in the Sailing Instructions to reflect the dodgy start to the season we’ve had. A lot of the weeks the weather has been unsuitable in the afternoon but sailable in the morning but the old SI’s didn’t allow a change of start times after 18.00 hrs Wednesday . As of now the new SI’s allow a change up until 12.00 hrs Friday. This will only be used if the Sailing Committee feels that if we keep the start at 2.00 pm we won’t get a sail in at all. It is not intended to get extra races in. This might not suit everyone that have other morning commitments ( like a well deserved sleep in )but we will endeavor to give at least 24 hrs notice and only after much consideration.

That’s enough for now, see you all this Sunday for perfect wind and clear skies. And Duncan, don’t forget to check under the bed for that clown. He’s a fat bugger but he can sail ,( the clown people, the clown )!

Welcome Event for New Members

SBSC Executive Committee warmly invite new members to attend a ‘welcome event’ at the Club to meet some of the executive, learn a little of the Club’s history & current activities.

We ask that you arrive for 1.30pm to enjoy some canapes and a complimentary beverage prior to the formalities.

We will have Keelboat and OTB racing happening, along with our Sunday Sounds that afternoon so we would love you to remain on afterwards, enjoy the club and deck areas, watch the action from the balcony, enjoy the music, maybe even have some tapas & chat to the other new members.

Rear Commodore’s Mutterings

Well last weekend was a much better sailing weekend for all fleets, kicking off on Friday night with a healthy 25 boat fleet for Friday Twilight. As everyone is aware, we are running with a new scoring system this year. Sailsys has only been in operation at our club for 6 weeks and as evidenced by Friday Nights finishing times, the spread is beginning to come in, with all boats finishing within 16 minutes of each other. Sailsys is a work in progress, the more often you sail, the more data the program can collect on your boats performance. Simply put, this is not an exact science and you can’t win every week. Hopefully over a season, all boats will get an opportunity to have their moment in the sun or sunset. With longer days comes longer races, so those boats that need more distance to have a chance, will get that chance as we head into the Summer months.

The first of the Margaret Hollamby female helm races was imbedded into last Friday nights twilight race, well done to all the female helms on Friday night, of which there were 12, congratulations to Katrina Mackie on 2Xtreme for a well deserved first up win. Your Keel Boat captain decided to put a fixed mark out at 25, thanks to Zac Lowe and Matt Whitaker for heading out on the Blue RHIB, taking photos and setting this actual mark! Hopefully the weather plays its part and we can lay a mark for Friday nights and dispense with the virtual stuff for a while but this relies on volunteers, so when you see them out there, thank them for giving up their time.

The Keel Boat fleet started in a mill pond on Sunday morning, however, the breeze came in albeit a bit later than wanted, but eventually everyone set off on a light North Westerly, the breeze kept hooking left as the morning and day wore on until this too evaporated before a light sea breeze came in from the east at around 3pm. Well done to Fiona and Nick Jones on Vamonos for their first and Till Brauckman on 11:11 for his first in Div 2 (Till will need some competition in Div 2, so come on you guys, get out there!).

The Sunday OTB fleet saw the best numbers in the yard for a couple of seasons, particularly this early on in the season, maybe it was just the lack of opportunity and the rubbish wind that has been dished up, that had everyone salivating at the thought of getting some quality racing in. It was particularly pleasing to see fleets of boats, 4 A class, 4 Tasar, 8 Sabres, 5 420’s, 3 B14’s. in any case we had 33 boats turn up to what little room there was left in the yard, but the vibe around the club was fantastic and with RO Geoff suggesting 3 races, we all set off to the start with great expectations. with a nice 8-10knt south westerly, we all set off only to be met with the south westerly petering out fighting the sea breeze and RO Geoff wisely pulled the pin on the race, citing the unfairness of the breeze whilst yours truly was becalmed in the South East corner of the course watching everyone else overtake me. Such was the hole I found, it would have taken me 1/2 an hour to finish the course, so thanks Geoff, I owe you $50!

The second start commenced once the sea breeze had settled in. Thankfully this time we all enjoyed a great race and managed to finish one of the promised 3 races. Hopefully Goldilocks arrives next week! Thanks to all our volunteers in the tower and on the water for ensuring a great weekend of racing was had by all. We can’t race without you!

The club have been advised that the Coast Guard will be conducting a flare training session for their members on Thursday 23/11/23 at 6:30pm

Day started out lovely with a nice breeze around the 8 knot mark which was fighting somewhat to go Southerly but did manage to stay Westerly for most of the time, until it decided to have a break and go to sleep, making it unfair somewhat particularly when some were into their third lap. Gotta love the winds down here!

Whilst Geoff and D patiently waited to re-assess poor Duncan managed to lose his mast but fortunately he was OK albeit he was done for the day but was towed back safely. Wind ended up doing a complete turnaround to 130 degrees coming off the land, but we managed to get underway again after a compete course reset which was a success.

The finish mark tried to escape Start boat after coming undone but was grabbed in time before it headed out through the heads. Eric suffered a similar mast fate to Duncan the race included a few faces we hadn’t seen for a little while. Murray in his very quick sneaky start in race 2 and Nicks crew in the 420 nearly managed to take out some others with his Evil Knievel move….

Total of 28 boats in the fleet which was great, and the day also included lights and sirens going off around 2 PM with what we soon found out to be the aircraft crash just out to sea off Mt Martha, the result of which seems to be tragic, our thoughts are with the plane’s crew and family.

Deidre also spotted a new pair of Abbey Everett and Ollie Bulka in the 420 they looked very capable and may be a force to be reckoned with.

Shout out to Geoffrey who picked the course pretty early on and with the help of ol mate Buoyzone enabled the Rhib crews of Rob C, Simon, Wayne and Russell to get the course set up in no time. Thanks to the RHIB crew volunteers you know how much we appreciate you all!

We had a great turnout on Friday night, with 12 out of 22 starters entering the female helm series. Congratulations to Katrina for taking out Race 1! Next female helm pursuit race is on 8 December.

You may have been thinking there was a new boat in the SBSC fleet on Friday night when ‘Tiffany’ radioed into the tower. However Tiffany has no sails, she is the club’s new blue RHIB which was out there laying a real buoy mark near 25. Thanks to Matt and Zac for their efforts getting the buoy out there and back home, and to Judy, Amanda and the crew of Vincitore for a great job in the tower.

A big thank you to the tower crew on Sunday (Amanda Malin and Andrew Arblaster). Andrew kindly filled in when asked at short notice and we really appreciate it – and I’m sure you’ll all enjoy reading his Sunday race report below.

Sunday Race Report by Andrew Arblaster:

Seven yachts with 34 crews entered for the race. Course 35 was selected as this was the one of the long-distance races for the series. At 10.00am there was no wind at the start and over the course. After two delayed starts there was some wind and start was initiated for 11.00am. All the boats started very well, with Vamonos in the best position followed by Vincitore. Y Knot went left at the Yellow Pile hoping for a lift along the shore. The rest of the fleet went right up the centre of the course heading for Mark 19. The centre of the course paid off, particularly for Vamonos and Empara. Once around 19 there were not a lot of passing lanes with the reach to Mark 25 and a run back to the club.

Vamonos and Vincitore held their spinnakers very well from 25 to the Yellow and then through the finish. As there were signs that the breeze might decrease later in the day, the race committee took the decision to shorten the course.

11.11 had a good spinnaker run from 25 to the Yellow mark where they completed a very efficient drop. Mr Bojangles also completed a very good drop at Yellow. Empara sailed a good race for a small boat, particularly in the upwind leg. Amanda Malin was Race Officer for the day, ensuring the race ran smoothly.

Great to see Necessit’e back out on the bay with new owner/skipper Nick Veloutos joining the SBSC fleet – welcome Nick!

And we encourage more Division 2 boats to get out on the water in the coming weeks – remember; we need a minimum of two boats to have a race.

Another week and another blow out!

So far we have only managed two weeks of sailing since opening day which has been disappointing for the OTB fleet. The Keel Boats managed to get around their course in 20-30knts, however the OTB fleet pin was pulled just as the majority of the fleet was approaching the windward mark. As gusts hit 30knts, Geoff wisely sent everyone ashore, but it was a fun and wild ride! Well done to all volunteers for getting out there and keeping a watchful eye on the fleet as we all made it back safely to shore…….eventually, Murray McNeill being the lone straggler. in the immortal words of our OTB Captain, let’s hope the goldilocks principal kicks in next week.

Congratulations to Mark and Oliver Bulka who managed an equal first in the recent Sail Country Regatta held at Lake Hume in Wodonga. Sail Country has not been held for 4 years due to Covid and a dose of blue green algae last year. This years iteration was sailed in spectacular conditions of 5-12knts, sunny skies and a lake full to the brim, so much so that we were launching directly from the grassed area in front of the club rather than the dust bowl that was there 4 years ago due to such low water levels. A highly enjoyable regatta.

I would like to recognise the Bendigo Bank who recently approved a grant which the club successfully applied for. The grant was for the new motor on the Coaching RHIB and we were granted $7500.00. Please support the bank that supports our club and has done so for many years. The new RHIB now resides in the Boat Yard in the stacker, which offers us easy convenient access via the D’Albora App, which simply requires us to log in a launch and it will be done on time, every time. We have now had three requests for hire of the RHIB, funds which will go towards to cost of storing the RHIB in the stacker, which are approximately $5000 per year.

The BotMark has been purchased and we are awaiting the imminent arrival of it from Sydney, where we will trial the mark before Christmas and hopefully leave virtual marks behind!

Congratulations to Jason Close and his crew on board Patriot who won just about everything in the recent Melbourne to Devonport ORCV race. Congratulations also to Steve Twentyman and his motley crew aboard Shimmer for their great showing in the race.

There has been a lot of other activity around the club that your executive are attending to: - Solar panels are now installed on the roof of the club, couple this with the new LED lights installed recently and the club should now start enjoying some much reduced power bills - Commercial grade wifi has been installed by James Anderson and a new password will be circulated once it has been switched on. - In principal support has been granted by the Shire for the change rooms to be upgraded. Much still needs to be done to turn this into a reality, however, the changes are imminent and exciting as the change rooms are tired and looking every bit of their original 1976 era age. - After consultation with Cambridge Management, we were unsuccessful in gaining approval for the weather station to be mounted on the Starboard Groyne of the Marina entrance, we will now be seeking to mount the weather station on top of the lift tower on the top of the clubhouse.

Off The Beach

Wow! What a ride last Sunday. In keeping with our fairy tale theme, all seemed to be going well with Goldilocks and her palls when all of a sudden the Big Bad Wolf showed up and blew our house down!

It was one of those days that promised so much, and then gave us so much more. A little too much in fact. With the race team already on the water for keelboat start, it seemed a shame to waste an opportunity for a sail even though it was hovering around 20knots. With 10 boats rigged and on the beach ready to go with experienced crews chomping at the bit, RO Geoff reluctantly agreed to give us a start. So off we went for a long beat to the start line ( what happened to that South Westerly that was predicted? ) By the time we got there the wind had picked up a bit more, but we managed to get three starts away with not too much drama. Not to be denied his fun, that Big Bad Wolf just kept on coming and it wasn’t long before before Geoff wisely said “ You little Piggies turn around and get yer selves back to the beach!” By that stage the wind had crept up to around 30knots and the fun really began. As I said, all those on the water were experienced sailors and the dead run home was pretty awesome if you could stay upright.

Unfortunately for Katrina M, she fell foul of the deadly Sabre tailwind back flip which dumps you out on the wrong side of your boat to stand it up and after several attempts it finally turned turtle - game over, bring on the rescue boat! Meanwhile the rest of us were nearing the beach, and what a sight for sore eyes with a dozen or so people waiting waist deep in the waves ready to help. With grins all round and not one cry of “Serves you right, ya nutbags!” all boats were dragged up pretty quickly and then the wait to help Katrina, who was coming in hot! As she got closer, I thought “how has she grown a mustache so quickly?” only to find Luke Martin at the tiller and Kat following in the RHIB. She was unceremoniously dumped out and Luke headed back out into the waves with Other Luke Marcasani as we were still missing one sailor, Murray M in his Laser. Turns out Murray had broken his outhaul and the sail was acting like a big spinnaker and just pulling him over. Now you can’t drop the sail on a Laser at sea like you can on a ‘normal’ boat, so the answer was to tip it over again and Luke jumped in the water and pulled it off like a wet sock. Drew M in the other RHIB with Greg W escorted him back to the beach where the wind was strong enough for him to sail back without a sail. A great sight to see him standing up surfing the waves, hanging ten off the front!

All in all, even though we didn’t get a race in everyone agreed it was worth a try. It was only possible because we had a great race team on the water and it highlights the necessity of having at least one experienced crewmember in each RHIB in case things go pear shaped, and as the designated swimmer, you must be dressed and ready to jump in if needed to.

Thanks again to everyone this week from the RHIB crews, Deirdre and Geoff in the Start boat and all the people that helped on the beach- heartwarming. That’s what makes Safety Beach such a great Club.

What an excellent night for a Friday evening sail. It started off a little glum with no wind at all, but a light easterly eventually kicked in and was enough to get everyone home in a timely fashion.

Many thanks to Steve Twentyman for making last Friday night's sail so much fun. He broadcast on the radio that he would pay for drinks at the bar for the combined ages of the youngest and oldest crew members racing on each boat that night.

Prize winners were youngest, Vamanos and oldest, Scamp. We are definitely an eclectic mix with the average crew age ranging from 30 to 71YO. Much joviality and fun followed back at the club after racing, and we would like to extend our appreciation.

Congratulations to Unprecedented who took out both the pursuit race and AMS.

Cup Weekend Cruise to Docklands

If you didn’t join the Cup Weekend cruise to Yarra’s Edge, Docklands you missed out on a fabulous time. Four boats sailed up in light southerly winds – Whiskers, Summer Lovin’, Summer Breeze and 11:11. Weather in Melbourne was beautiful over the weekend and we were then lucky enough to have light northerlies for the return trip on Monday – you couldn’t ask for more than that.

Yarra’s Edge on the Eastern side of the Docklands was a perfect location – close to DFO for a bit of retail therapy and also a good stepping off point for any of Melbourne’s attractions. We had a great night on Saturday night at the nearby 'Hooks at the Yarra' and a fun BBQ on Whiskers on Sunday night.

The first of Mornington Yacht Club’s Long Distance Series (Capel Sound Race) is on this Saturday. First warning signal for Keelboat Division is 08:55H and Trailerable at 09:00H

You can enter either the Long-Distance Series (8 races) for a fee of $50, or single races $20. Now that you have your SailSys account set up, entering is a breeze.

We hope to see some SBSC boats on the start-line. Please ensure entries are in by 5.00pm Friday so that MYC can process handicaps. Crew numbers (POB) can be advised with radio check before the start in lieu of crew lists.
