Howdy Gang.

It looks like with the end of the summer season nearly upon us, the weather is finally coming up trumps. Last Sunday was just a beautiful day to be on the water. A little light on in the wind department but still enough to get two races in. And with SBSC hosting the Phaedrus B14 Cup, RO Geoff opted for course 4, windward/returns, to suit their style. Although there was only three B14`s (two and a half really as Paul F said he was there in body but defiantly not in spirit as he is still getting over his month long leurgy), they still made their presence felt. Especially Brett F and able crewperson Grace L, who were roaring around the cones like there was no tomorrow! Needless to say, the took home the bickies, or rather, the bottles at the end of the day. Thanks Ewan for your generous sponsorship of this event.

A bit of a mixed fleet for the rest of us. 18 boats all up with most of our classes represented, with the exception of the 420`s. Where have they gone? Aurelia M and Kristen K were on rhib duty and Zac L, Finn M and Ollie B were roaring around in the blue rhib testing out its shiny new hydraulic steering, so hopefully they will all be back soon to terrorise those Laser sailors! Talking of Lasers, as there was no sign of Murray M last week, I was left wondering if he was being true to his word. After soundly beating Grace L the week before in one race he declared, “I have reached my pinnacle in sailing, this will never happen again so I might as we give up now!” I sure hope not Muzz, Sundays on the water wouldn’t be the same without you.

Sorry Folks, back to the racing. Race 1 was sailed in light breeze with lots of shifts to keep the punters guessing, so the normal finishing order didn’t apply.

Race 2 saw the wind easing even further so I was quite happy that Geoff put the Div 2 start first as that meant we were finished and back on the beach while, some of the other boats still had a lap to go with the wind down to about 2-3 knots. Any mistakes made in race 1 were not made by the experienced sailors in the second race 2. Not so the inexperienced, so that put the results back to where they should be.

That was about it for the day. Thanks again to the race team. We had nearly as many people on duty as there were yachts on the water with RO Geoff on Start with Super D ( freshly back from a stint with Gamblers Help, so hopefully that will be an end to the high priced chips ), on Woodsy we had James E , Greg L and Simon H, while as mentioned earlier, Sutherland was crewed by Aurelia M, Kristen K and along for the ride was Owen Thompson on a visit back from Switzerland. There must be something in that Swiss water as Owen seemed about a foot taller than last time I saw him! The with the Trio of Terror in the blue rhib, it made for 11 people on duty! That must be a record for a non regatta day surely.

If you were wondering where Gingerbread Bill M was last week, He took his trusty new Impulse up to Yarrawonga for the State Titles and came a creditable 7th in a strong fleet of 17 boats, good job Bill.

Okay, we are down to the wire with just one more sail left for the 23/24 Summer season, so as I’ve said before, Get Yer Bum In A Boat and get on the water. It’s your last chance and the weather will be PERFECT, I promise!

The KISS Committee is excited to announce the third running of the Keelboat Introduction to Sailing Savvy (KISS) program for 2024, open to all Victorian women and now open for business! The vision of the program founder, Queenscliff Cruising Yacht Club’s Immediate Past Commodore Lee Renfree in partnership with Ocean Racing Club of Victoria has now graduated 52 women over two years, empowering them to transition from “passengers” to active, confident “participants”. Safety Beach Sailing Club NEWS 17th April 2024

Howdy gang.

Another nice day on the water last Sunday with 22 lucky sailors taking part. The wind was very light but at least the expected rain held off for the whole day, so small blessings eh? Although the breeze was down in strength it stayed in for the entire first race with a steady shift to the right, so if you went left off the line you were a winner. And guess what? No one sailed the wrong course! Another highlight was young Nathan Anderson getting his first hooter for crossing the finish line first in Div 1. It wont be long before he’s nipping on Dad James’ heels and maybe lining up with another junior in a 420 perhaps.

RO Geoff set a nice course with the help of an all junior team in the RHIBs. Nick M and Jess L were in Sutherland looking after the bottom end and Abbey E and Matt W in Woodsy set the top marks. These guys and gals did a great job and their experience sailing at lots of other regattas showed through with a keen understanding of where the marks needed to be without Geoff having to second guess them. Another nice thing the ‘Youngens’ brought to the course was a bit of music rolling across the water. As a Tina Turner fan though, I can say from experience that it can be hazardous attempting the Nutbush in a Sabre. But hey, what are you gunna do when the music takes control!

The other thing that was rolling across the water was Nick’s BOOMING voice letting rip at a large power boat that came roaring through the middle of the course. I reckon he would have given Mono a run for his money! Also good to see Super Deirdre back from her week in Las Vegas none the worst for wear. Although we all know, ‘ What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas!’ But if David has to up the price of a bowl of chips, you might guess why.

After a bit of a course change at the top end, we all lined up for a mass start for race two in dying wind, only to have it drop out completely right after the hooter. Super D put up the postponement flag but the writing was on the wall, and two minutes later it was followed by the ‘Bugger off home’ flag. This was disappointing but in the end it was the right call as by the time we hit the beach, the wind had gone completely. All’s well that ends well though as we were packed up early and with daylight savings over, we were all up on the deck enjoying a pre Vegas tax bowl of chips and watching the most magnificent sunset over perfect glassy water, magic!

Only two sails left for the summer season so don’t miss out. Next week we are being joined by the B14’s for the second day of their state titles. They are joining in our race with their own start- very civilised of them to allow us to be part of the fun.

Now if you feel that you haven't had enough sailing this season, and lets face it, we have missed out on a lot of days due to poor conditions, Bill Manning is organising another Winter series like last year. It will be a simplified course held on alternate Sunday mornings to coincide with the keelboat Brass Monkey series. Bill is seeking expressions of interest for sailors and helperouters to make this viable, so find Bill and let him know where you fit on his list. Also something to think about for the end of the season is the Club Person and Junior Club Person of the year, so think back and give a thought to someone you would like to nominate for these prestigious titles. There are a lot of hard working, selfless people in the Club so even to be nominated is gratifying.
