Yowza,Yowza,Yowza!

What a great days sailing we had on Sunday! After the disappointment of last week, this week was one to really write home about. An early one o'clock start gave us the chance to run three races to catch up in the Club Championship series, so RO Geoff  (good to have you back on the water Geoff ) took full advantage of the 15 knot south west breeze and the lack of powerboats/jet skis to set a nice close to shore windward return course. That would be course one for those that read the course board on the back of the start boat. You guessed it folks- I didn't. As I crossed the finish line downwind, then turned back to say g'day to the race team I was surprised to be met with stoney silence, just a bit of guarded finger pointing from Deirdre. Was I in trouble for crossing back over the line while there were still boats finishing? Had I transgressed in some other way I didn't know about? Perhaps they just don't like me! All these things crossed my mind until Bill M pointed out that course one finish is through the bottom gate and upwind over the line. Ahh, of course! So round I went and over the line properly to be met with a small cheer and a loud shout of RTBO!!! Which in Geoff speak translates to "Read The Bloody Orders". Good advice for all.

Our fleet was a little small this week owing to a few families still being away after the nationals. Special mention to our younger members in the 420's who had the highest number of entries from a single club, with Kristen K and Jess L second on handicap and Nick M and Riley E third on handicap and eighth overall on yardstick. Fantastic effort in a national event, well done everyone.

While the fleet may have been small, those on the water all had a blast! The Cats were really zipping round the marks and Ewan C remarked afterwards, "That was the most fun you can have in public". He obviously didn't see Molly at the Elton John concert- but lets not go there! The wind was strong but by no means stable with some big lifts and knocks to move you up and drag you back again if you thought about it for too long and some of those bullets that came through really had you hanging on; Duncan M went swimming so many times I thought he might be having bladder problems!

Two races of windward / return and it was time for the rhib crews to move the marks again. This time for race three and some triangles- WooHoo, those reaches were what we were looking for!
The sun came out and the wind was just right to catch some waves and really fly, and those bullets were like hitting the Nitro button- pure magic!

A huge thank you to the race team this week for a really big effort. An early start, setting a start for the keelboats, three races with two courses and a few changes due to wind shifts- it doesn't get much bigger than that! This week saw the return of Geoff as RO as well as Super Deirdre and Alister M on Start with Bruce M and Simon H in Sutherland and Ross M and new recruit Con Kasiaras on Woodsy. Con comes to us via the Coast guard and expressed an interest in helping out on the rhibs. He's not a sailor but has many years of power boat experience and will be a great asset so please make him welcome.
Next week is back to our regular 2.00 pm start, 1.57 first warning and the weather is looking good, so as our old friend Molly would say, " Do yourself a favour!"

That's all for now, Cheers, Pete Chippy.

A Class Nationals

The nationals were hosted by Gippsland Lakes Sailing Club at Paynesville last week and SBSC were represented by four boats. Stuart and Dave in the Foiling division and Glenn and Ewan in the Classic (non-foiling) division. A total of 48 boats entered which was the highest number in quite a few years, good to see the class is growing! The race management and hospitality of the club was excellent and we got a full 12 races in over four days of sailing in a range of wind conditions. The persistent Easterlies stirred up a lot of weed though which played havoc with the foilers in particular. Obviously it was a star-studded line up of past Olympians and world champions plus also Paul Larson who still holds the world sailing speed record which he set on VESTAS Sail Rocket 2 about ten years ago. He was just back in Oz for a holiday and thought he’d charter a boat!
Not fazed by all the famous sailors Dave sailed a great regatta and came third, beating three-time world champion Steve Brewin in the process!
Stuart also had a great result coming 6th but unfortunately got a couple of holes in his boat courtesy of a pre-race T-bone, ouch! Glenn and Ewan traded blows at the back end of their division but learnt a lot while learning from the fleet and both managed a mid-fleet finish each. All results here

Regatta Season Results

Tasar Australian Championships

The 48th Tasar Nationals were held at Toronto Amateur sailing club on Lake Macquarie in NSW from the 31st of December- 6th of January.A fleet of 33 Tasars were tested in shifty and gusty conditions which really shook the fleet up. There were no east lanes in a very hot fleet that boasted Olympic level sailors, no less than 6 world Champions and the skipper of 3rd on Line Honours in the recent Sydney to Hobart Black Jack. All Safety Beach members tried their hardest with Mark and Oliver Bulka finishing a very solid 5th, highlighted by incredible results on day 3 of a 2,2,4.Ross and Natasha finishing on a high note with 2 top ten results in day 5 finishing 16th.Mono, Aurelia and Imogen finished 19th overall having their best result on day 5 with an 8th. It was an exceptionally high class fleet and a great lead in to the World Championship to be held at Sandringham YC in January next year.

420 Nationals Metung

Congratulations to James Jackson & Harrison Chapman from MYC placing 1st Overall.
SBSC competitors placed in following:

Overall Results:
8th Nick Meijer & Riley Everett
13th Abbey Everett & Steph Koutsimpiris
16th Zac Lowe & Finn Meijer
19th Jess Lowe & Kristen Koutsimpris

(Junior Division - U16)
3rd Zac Lowe & Finn Meijer

Handicapped Results:
2nd Jess Lowe & Kristen Koutsimpris
3rd Nick Meijer & Riley Everett.

The kids have had a fantastic and exhausting regatta sailing 12 races over 4 days. Huge effort. Well done to all of you!!!

B14 Nationals

The two SBSC crews did very well. Our 2 teams went into the last heat equal on points in second place. The last heat was a good old fashioned tussle starting next to each other at the pin end and pushing each other all the way around the race track. Congrats to both teams.
Final results
2nd place #375 Craig Garmston / Paul Fleming
3rd place #378 Brent Frankcombe / Leigh Dunstan
Big thankyou to Kingston Beach Sailing Club and the Tasmanian B14 Association for a awesome event.

Off The Beach News

Howdy Gang.
Well it was an unfortunate fizzer on Sunday. Great day for beach goers as the bumper to bumper traffic on the Pen Link foretold, but alas not enough wind to get a race completed. The Race team of Rick P and Deirdre S on Start with Bruce M, Fiona L, Rob C and Dennis the Menace on the rhibs did a sterling job of setting a course and tried their best to get a race going in the light breeze. I think they all deserve a medal for just launching the boats amid the chaos that was the boat ramp on Sunday. I suppose that's the price we pay for living in such a beautiful part of the world, everyone else wants a part of it too!

This week saw the return of a lot of sailors from the various regattas around the country and SBSC had some notable success. I'm sure Fiona will list the results that she has to date but I know all the young'uns had a very successful time at Metung in the 420's and the Martins, young and old had a blast at Lake Macquarie. Of extra note up there is Mark and Oliver Bulka coming 5th overall in a fleet that contained many national and world champions. Great job guys.

At time of writing, I'm not sure how Paul Fleming went down in Tassie in the B14's and the A class gang are still competing at Paynesville so good luck to them.

This Sunday is the next round of the Club Championship and will be an earlier start following an on water start for the Keelboats. Our start time will be 13.00, 12.57 first warning, so don't miss out. RO Geoff won't be waiting for the stragglers taking their sweet time getting off the beach anymore( that would be me ), so if the wind is light, give yourself plenty of time to make the start line.

Another one to put in the memory bank is the Australia Day regatta on the 26th. It is a Thursday this year and racing will start at 11.00, 10.57 first warning. There will be a sausage sizzle before racing and everyone is encouraged to decorate their boats to really get into the fun of the day.

One last thing before I sign off this week. Now I know we really don't like our Jetskiing neighbors, but they are people too and I encourage everyone to go forth and make friends with them. Get up close and personal, really really close- it makes it that much easier to rip out their bungs without them noticing !!!

That's all for this week. Cheers, Pete Chippy

Smooth Operator - ARC Race Update (received 5th Jan)

Following on from the last update in November Smooth Operator had a very successful crossing of the Atlantic Ocean.  We departed from Las Palmas on the 20th November with brisk winds which quickly settled into 15 - 20kts from the North East and life on board was extremely good with plenty of food, sleep and regular showers onboard.  This was all going well until 2 weeks into our crossing when a tropical low formed in the North Atlantic Ocean which had a big effect on our weather in that we had a period of NO wind followed by light winds on the nose - definitely not in the brochure.  The end result of this is that we motored for the last part of the crossing and had to take a slight detour into Barbados to get extra fuel.  We arrived at the finish line which is at Rodney Bay in St Lucia at around midnight on Saturday the 10th December.  The trip was 3,000nm and took 20.5 days which was a bit longer than we had expected.

The ARC (Atlantic Rally for Cruisers) made our arrival very special and we were greeted by lots of cheers and rum punch even at midnight.  They also did a great job of providing lots of support for the yachts and some excellent events, parties and lectures both before and after the rally.

Our time at Rodney Bay was not wasted as there were a few minor boat jobs to attend to and we were all very happy to spend some time on land again and enjoy some small luxuries like  a meal out and a shower that doesn't move!!.

Russ and Di - have headed back to their home in Main Ridge to spend some time at home with their family and friends as they have been travelling since May so very generously suggested that the Smooth Crew look after their very beautiful yacht for 4 weeks in the Caribbean so how could we refuse.  The plan is to get the yacht to Antigua by mid January when we meet up with Russ and Di again to hand the boat back.  On the way we have visited some really interesting places on St Lucia, Martinique, Dominica, Les Saintes and we are now anchored off Guadeloupe. The interesting thing in the Caribbean is that the islands are all quite close together (20-40NM) and each one is a different country and often quite different both geographically and culturally.  We have posted quite a few photos of our travels on our FB page at Di's Facebook Page

Well done to junior member Jamieson, who took his new boat Terabyte out for his very first solo sail on Sunday 7th. Jamieson was also asked to step in and crew for one of the 420 boats in the afternoon races, and was very quick to get out on the wire and fly through the wind like a pro. Love your zest for sailing Jamieson. Well done, keep it up mate!

Happy New Year Everyone,
I trust you all had a good break and misbehaved appropriately.

Well we're into the second part of the season and a lot of you have been away sailing in national championships which will be well under way by now if not finished already, so good luck, congratulations or commiserations depending on the circumstances. I know Fiona is going to put some of the results up on the Facebook page so you can check out how everyone is going.

Our Club racing returns this Sunday for round three of the Foundation series and by all accounts the weather is looking good, so bring out that new sail Santa got you and give it a crack. Normal start time of 14.00 ,13.57 first warning, so don't miss out!

Talking about not missing out, it's only four weeks until our yearly trip around the cliff to Mt Martha Yacht Club on the 5th of February. We're going there first this year as RO Geoff is unavailable that week at our end so they will come to us the following week, the 12th. The last couple of years they have had the wood on us and it all boils down to numbers. We regularly sail the pants off them but struggle to get a decent fleet around there. As the scoring works on 10 points for first place, 9 for second and so on in each division and a point for every boat that starts regardless of placing, it doesn't take much working out that if we have the first boat over the line, that's 10 points for us, bit if they get the next four because we didn't have any more boats in that division, that's 30 points for them! Not good at all. It's a beautiful sail there and back, and we always have the rhibs to escort us around for safety's sake, so if you haven't been before, make it a definite this year.

I'm working on the duty roster for the new year and plan to have it out ASAP so stay tuned for that and again, if your name is there and you can't make it, get it changed as soon as you can, don't leave it to the last minute please. That will do for now, sorry to end with a whinge. After this week's sailing there will be some much happier stuff to write about I'm sure.

Cheers for now, Pete Chippy

Off The Beach News

Howdy gang, here's wishing you all a merry Christmas and a safe and happy holiday break.

Lots of sailors heading off to various regattas this year. We have the A class guys, a bunch of Tasars, Paul Fleming in a B14 and from what I've heard, the largest contingent of 420's from any club, great job everyone. With all those boats being away over Christmas/ New Year, it means that sailors will be pretty thin on the ground at home. So on that note, after much discussion, it was decided to cancel the Christmas series that was scheduled for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd of January. It was deemed " Not Viable" as the logistics of getting crews for the race boats when there might not be anyone racing
seemed inappropriate.

On a brighter note, last Sunday's racing was nothing short of spectacular! An early start to allow for the Club Christmas party and a strong wind prediction kept a few regulars away, which was a real shame as the offshore wind, coupled with a cloudless sky made for ideal sailing conditions. We even had a dolphin following us around the course!

A good length triangle set by RO Rick Potter, ably assisted by Super D on start, Fiona Martin with Bruce Mansfield in one rhib and Rob Campbell with junior member, Xavier Graham in the other gave us two good races with no casualties. Although at on point we did have an extra rescue boat on the course as Glen Lazzar decided to carry out a Man (or in this case, Girl) Overboard drill and turfed Jess Lowe off their boat and had to drop the spinnaker, turn about and go back to pick her up. "All in a day's work" he said later, " No probs".

Thanks to everyone on the race team this week and a special thanks to Ross Martin for launching all three boats ( on his own )on Saturday. I know Ross was keen to get a last practice in with Natasha before heading to Paynesville for the Tasar nationals. They didn't see the dolphin and Ross claimed they were too fast for a dolphin to keep up! Ha, I thought I was the one to guild the lilly!

Anyway, good luck to all the SBSC sailors heading away to their various regattas. Travel safe and here's hoping you bring back some silverware. Short and sweet this week (like my long suffering wife, although she's short and sweet every week). Have a great break everyone and we'll see you all in the new year for some awesome sailing, the wind and weather is going to be perfect-guaranteed !

Cheers, Pete Chippy

Skippers and crews from the near 50 boat fleet are counting down the days to the start of the 50th anniversary of the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria’s (ORCV) Melbourne to Hobart Yacht Race and as final preparations are made, several boats are in contention for line honours.

One of the top performing boats to watch is Damien King’s Frers 61, Margaret Rintoul V (MRV). King, from the Sandringham Yacht Club (SYC), is certainly in form, taking line honours in the short coastal Apollo Bay Race earlier in the year, sailing the classic beauty to victory in a close race.

King, a multiple world and national champion sailor, boasts one of the classiest and most experienced sailing crews in the fleet who are not only hot shot sailors but also lifetime friends of the popular skipper.
Mark Byrne is the navigator on MRV and is an accomplished yachtsman in his own right.  King will be sharing the helming duties with close friend Grant Allen, and will be looking to America’s Cup campaigner, Ben Morrison-Jack, to give MRV the drive and tactical advantage on the trip to Hobart.

“I’ve never competed in this race before, but if it’s anything like the Sydney to Hobart, the race can be won or lost in the River Derwent. Luckily for us we have international sailor Tim Burnell on board. Tim is a local and has sailed on the Derwent for the past 35 years,” said King. Burnell will be hoping for a touch of family luck as he tries to repeat the previous success of his father, Rob Burnell, who won the race on two occasions.

Sailing with close friends is important to King. “Apart from Nick [Sayer], we have all grown up sailing together from 14 years of age, and while we are lifelong competitors, we are all the best of mates, so we have plenty of laughs among the serious competition”, said King.
Launched in 1996, MRV is widely regarded as one of the finest and most luxurious cruising yachts ever built in Australia. The yacht was built for then Sydney-based sailor, Stan Edward, under the experienced eye of the late international yachtsman Tasmania’s Graeme ("Frizzle") Freeman, who was appointed to oversee the build and fit out, a task he performed for many successful campaigns.
Previous winner and champion offshore sailor Paul Buchholz will push his Cookson 50, Extasea, hard and fast to Hobart with an eye on the 2022 line honours prize while fending off Gerry Cantwell’s Marten 49, Carrera S, and Antony Walton’s Reichel/Pugh 46, Hartbreaker which could also be in contention for first home if the conditions suit them.

The prestigious Heemskerk Perpetual trophy will go to the handicap winner on AMS and the field for this is wide open.
Rob Date’s Carkeek 43, Scarlet Runner, also from the SYC is in hot contention for the handicap win and, if the conditions are right, could also push the larger boats for line honours. Launched in 2022, she is designed to the Fast 40+ class rule and has achieved outstanding results on the competitive European circuit.

Challenging Scarlet Runner will be Victorian entry, Ginan. While an unknown quantity in the Westcoaster, skippers Nigel Jones and Cam McKenzie bought the J111 specifically to campaign her for the 50th race. The skippers have engaged the expertise of a J111 expert who will be onboard for the race and driving the crew for peak performance. Jones is no stranger to success, skippering Paladin to an overall win in the 1990 race and Cadibarra 7 in 1999.

Not to be underestimated is Andrew Jones’s Inglis 47, AdvantEDGE from the Port Dalrymple Yacht Club and Brent McKay’s Bakewell/White Z39, Jazz Player, which took line honours in 2009 under the guidance of skipper Andrew Lawrence.
McKay has his sights set on a hard and fast sail to Hobart.

“To win the race, we need to be smart about how we sail – making the right choice around King Island and making the most of the conditions when we sail up the Derwent. We will be working the boat hard, but one thing we know, when she’s off the wind, she’ll get up and boogie,” said McKay. (In the 2021 race, 80 percent of the fleet went west of King Island including eventual winner, Faster Forward, a rare feat in the race’s history books).

The 435 nautical mile Melbourne to Hobart Yacht Race, organised by the ORCV with the cooperation of the Derwent Sailing Squadron, starts off Portsea Pier at 12pm on 27 December.
