Hi all,
Happy New Year to everyone and I hope that you all had a terrific Christmas and New Year. Well done to all sailing members who have represented the club at various OTB and Keel Boat Regattas around the state and Country. Everyone is pretty much back home safe and sound and ready to tackle the second half of the season. A reminder to all members that all external gates and doors have been re-keyed. This means that your old key is no longer useful or helpful in gaining access to the yard or change rooms. A new registered key will need to be purchased for $50 (returnable bond on resignation from the club). Please see our yard master James Everett who is at the club every Sunday for your new key. No cash please just Credit or Debit cards accepted as payment. This Sunday we have the annual visit to Mount Martha. For those sailing around, the plan is to leave at 9.30am. warning signal at Mount Martha is 12.57pm, which will give plenty of time to sail back home in the afternoon, provided the breeze is good. Don’t forget to register/enter for Sail Peninsula. Entries continue to flow in and the organising committee has put a lot of work into to ensure it’s a fun event. The best support you can give as members is to enter the regatta and help make Sail Peninsula 2023, the best one yet.

Off The Beach News
Howdy OTB Gang.
How was your long weekend? Did you manage to get the whole four days or was it rudely interrupted by work on Friday? We had quite a number of sailors that ventured down to McCrae for the Ronston Regatta but I didn't get a chance for a debrief yet, maybe next week. I spoke with Tim Bardon about his and Andrew Doc Taylor's adventure across to Geelong for the Festival of Sails in Tim's oversize OTB dinghy 'Cirrus'. From all accounts they will never complain about Drew's or my overly long courses after being set off on a 25 nautical mile epic in light wind and finishing after 9 hours of racing! And that was just the first day!
Those of us that stayed closer to home were treated to some truly awesome sailing conditions in our own little Shark Bay. The Australia Day series on Thursday was always going to struggle for numbers, so it was decided early to run with just the Start boat and one rhib and run a simple windward/leeward with a single start for all classes. We had Geoff and Super D in Start and Wayne Jackson with Paul Martin, who had kindly put up their hands, in Sutherland. We had two races in a ripper 15 knot breeze from the South and a fleet of eight boats including the return of Drew M in his Sabre. Drew hasn't really sailed since the middle of last season and Duncan M and I couldn't get within cooee of him! I'm sure his parents are married, but there were some suggestions to the contrary. Another mighty feat was Campbell M sailing one and a half races single handed in his Taser after his "never having sailed before" crew failed to show after a timing mix up. Ah well, I suppose they still qualify as "never having sailed before". An almost mighty feat was performed by Taipan Tony Rogers who crossed the finish line way ahead of his rival Taipan sailor Nick Bacon. When I commented to the start boat team what a great job he had done, they said " Yeah, except he hasn't gone around any of the buoys! ". Nice try Tony, maybe one day they won't be watching.
Sunday dawned cool and rainy but with the promise of that same SSW wind we've had for the past few weeks, it was good to see about 20 boats show up. By race time the skies had cleared and the breeze was good so we headed out for what everyone agreed was one of the best days racing we've had so far. The wind stayed at a consistent 10/12 knots with plenty of swings to play, or not play, as you so desired. I favoured the watch and wait gambit as the wind generally swung back after 10 or 15 minutes. Hmm, perhaps that's why I can never catch Bill!
One thing that was great to see was Andrew Mono Martin crewing for Steph K in her 420. Mono's many years of experience in 420's was on constant display and his cries of " This is how to tea bag to the left and this is how to tea bag to the right" as well as the ever popular, "Normally we have the spinnaker in front of the main, but let's try it the other way around and see what happens" was a sheer delight to all! Seriously though, it really is a credit to Mono and all of our very experienced members who never fail to put themselves out to help our younger and less experienced sailors gain the knowledge that will keep them involved in this great sport for the rest of their lives. They may come and go, but once it's in your blood, it's there forever. Thanks this week to the rhib crews of Bruce, Simon, Alister, Con and Leanne as well as Deirdre and Geoff in Start.
Now finally, don't forget that this week, the 5th, is our turn to sail, or trailer, around the point for our annual race against Mount Martha. I know that the program shows them coming to us this week, but a scheduling conflict called for a swap, so they will be coming to SBSC the following week, the 12th instead. Please, Please, Please make the effort to join in the fun and hopefully we can bring the trophy home again. As usual, we will be leaving Safety Beach at around 9.30 with a rhib escort for a 1.00 pm race start, and if you haven't sailed around before, it's a really nice trip with views of the coast that only our keelboat compadres usually get to see. If you don't want to sail around Sunday morning, you can take your boat by trailer on the day, otherwise Mount Martha Club will be open for drop off between 5.00 and 7.00 Friday evening and 3.00 and 5.00 Saturday afternoon. Don't miss it, it's a great day.

There were 17 starters for the Fun Twilight, with 4 electing to use spinnakers. Visiting boat ‘Original Sin’, who are in the marina in the lead-up to Sail Peninsula, ventured out for their first race with our fleet – setting a SBSC record of 21 POB!! Click here for full results.
Our dedicated regulars in the tower ran the two races over the Australia Day weekend so the rest of us could enjoy the racing. Race Time Limits:

As per SI’s 13.1 (Combined Division Start Races), the limit for the first boat in each division to sail the course and finish is 3 hours. Boats failing to finish within the time limit or within 60 minutes of the finishing time of the first boat in the Division, whichever is later, will be scored Did Not Finish (DNF).

Safety & Sea Survival Course - Sunday February 12th
A comprehensive course looking at how to avoid putting yourself and crew into a situation when at sea and if that should happen, what do you then do. An accrediated Australian Sailing course, experienced offshore sailors and trainers take you through online the theory content and then join you for the in-person day to complete the theory, review and practical sessions. Melbourne to King Island - Friday March 10th
This popular destination race provides crews the opportunity to experience category 2 ocean racing over 114nm. It's a special destination with amazing food, hospitality, and a deep safe harbour. ORCV Rip Tour of Port Phillip Heads - Sunday March 19th
“The Rip” is the narrow entrance to Port Phillip, where underwater reefs limit the navigable entrance to just 0.6nm and provides a restricted tidal flow between the ocean and Port Phillip, where over 4,000 commercial vessels transit annually.
Once a year, the ORCV runs an on-water tour from a large ferry looking at the navigation aids, tides, how to and which channels to use, radio protocols etc for a safe transit of the heads.

Cruising Weekend to Geelong
March 11-13, 2023 (Long Weekend)
Come for a great weekend cruise to Geelong. It’s a great location with lots to do - great foreshore, walks, restaurants etc.
We’ll sail over on Saturday March 11, spend the Saturday and Sunday night at Royal Geelong Yacht Club with the return sail on Monday March 13.
