Rear Commodore's Blurb

Hi all,

Happy New Year to everyone and I hope that you all had a terrific Christmas and New Year. Well done to all sailing members who have represented the club at various OTB and Keel Boat Regattas around the state and Country. Everyone is pretty much back home safe and sound and ready to tackle the second half of the season. A reminder to all members that all external gates and doors have been re-keyed. This means that your old key is no longer useful or helpful in gaining access to the yard or change rooms. A new registered key will need to be purchased for $50 (returnable bond on resignation from the club). Please see our yard master James Everett who is at the club every Sunday for your new key. No cash please just Credit or Debit cards accepted as payment. This Sunday we have the annual visit to Mount Martha. For those sailing around, the plan is to leave at 9.30am. warning signal at Mount Martha is 12.57pm, which will give plenty of time to sail back home in the afternoon, provided the breeze is good. Don’t forget to register/enter for Sail Peninsula. Entries continue to flow in and the organising committee has put a lot of work into to ensure it’s a fun event. The best support you can give as members is to enter the regatta and help make Sail Peninsula 2023, the best one yet.

Cheers! Mono

Off The Beach News

Howdy OTB Gang.
How was your long weekend? Did you manage to get the whole four days or was it rudely interrupted by work on Friday? We had quite a number of sailors that ventured down to McCrae for the Ronston Regatta but I didn't get a chance for a debrief yet, maybe next week. I spoke with Tim Bardon about his and Andrew Doc Taylor's adventure across to Geelong for the Festival of Sails in Tim's oversize OTB dinghy 'Cirrus'. From all accounts they will never complain about Drew's or my overly long courses after being set off on a 25 nautical mile epic in light wind and finishing after 9 hours of racing! And that was just the first day!

Those of us that stayed closer to home were treated to some truly awesome sailing conditions in our own little Shark Bay. The Australia Day series on Thursday was always going to struggle for numbers, so it was decided early to run with just the Start boat and one rhib and run a simple windward/leeward with a single start for all classes. We had Geoff and Super D in Start and Wayne Jackson with Paul Martin, who had kindly put up their hands, in Sutherland. We had two races in a ripper 15 knot breeze from the South and a fleet of eight boats including the return of Drew M in his Sabre. Drew hasn't really sailed since the middle of last season and Duncan M and I couldn't get within cooee of him! I'm sure his parents are married, but there were some suggestions to the contrary. Another mighty feat was Campbell M sailing one and a half races single handed in his Taser after his "never having sailed before" crew failed to show after a timing mix up. Ah well, I suppose they still qualify as "never having sailed before". An almost mighty feat was performed by Taipan Tony Rogers who crossed the finish line way ahead of his rival Taipan sailor Nick Bacon. When I commented to the start boat team what a great job he had done, they said " Yeah, except he hasn't gone around any of the buoys! ". Nice try Tony, maybe one day they won't be watching.

Sunday dawned cool and rainy but with the promise of that same SSW wind we've had for the past few weeks, it was good to see about 20 boats show up. By race time the skies had cleared and the breeze was good so we headed out for what everyone agreed was one of the best days racing we've had so far. The wind stayed at a consistent 10/12 knots with plenty of swings to play, or not play, as you so desired. I favoured the watch and wait gambit as the wind generally swung back after 10 or 15 minutes. Hmm, perhaps that's why I can never catch Bill!

One thing that was great to see was Andrew Mono Martin crewing for Steph K in her 420. Mono's many years of experience in 420's was on constant display and his cries of " This is how to tea bag to the left and this is how to tea bag to the right" as well as the ever popular, "Normally we have the spinnaker in front of the main, but let's try it the other way around and see what happens" was a sheer delight to all! Seriously though, it really is a credit to Mono and all of our very experienced members who never fail to put themselves out to help our younger and less experienced sailors gain the knowledge that will keep them involved in this great sport for the rest of their lives. They may come and go, but once it's in your blood, it's there forever. Thanks this week to the rhib crews of Bruce, Simon, Alister, Con and Leanne as well as Deirdre and Geoff in Start.

Now finally, don't forget that this week, the 5th, is our turn to sail, or trailer, around the point for our annual race against Mount Martha. I know that the program shows them coming to us this week, but a scheduling conflict called for a swap, so they will be coming to SBSC the following week, the 12th instead. Please, Please, Please make the effort to join in the fun and hopefully we can bring the trophy home again. As usual, we will be leaving Safety Beach at around 9.30 with a rhib escort for a 1.00 pm race start, and if you haven't sailed around before, it's a really nice trip with views of the coast that only our keelboat compadres usually get to see. If you don't want to sail around Sunday morning, you can take your boat by trailer on the day, otherwise Mount Martha Club will be open for drop off between 5.00 and 7.00 Friday evening and 3.00 and 5.00 Saturday afternoon. Don't miss it, it's a great day.

That's all for now, see you all Sunday. Cheers, Pete Chippy

Off The Beach News

G'day gang,

Well we had another great days sailing on Sunday with near perfect conditions. We're starting to get good numbers on the water at last, and Huey is rewarding us with some awesome weather. The wind was a steady 10 knots from the S.W. and the race team set a nice triangle course trialling the Bouyzone app to lay the marks, (no that's not Geoff's new Boy Band, that would be "RTBO" or "Run Up The Laundry" or something much more suitable). Bouyzone is a course laying app that takes the guesswork and maths out of setting the marks and works similarly to google maps in that the RO sets the course on the start boat tablet, then sends it to a phone or tablet on the rhibs who receive it like a pin on Maps and just drive the rhib to where the pin says and drop the mark, simples.

All went well, the course was set and the flags went up for the first start....and then the inevitable 30 degree wind shift! Easy fix with the app, just alter the wind direction on the start tablet and it recalculates the course and sends the new coordinates to the rhibs. This should make things a lot quicker and easier. There will be a bit of hardware to purchase and setup on the rhibs before its fully operational, but we will get there. Once we did get going on a pretty much dead Southerly course, there were no problems at all. We had about twenty boats sailing with a good mix of classes. We even had the Mighty Sharpie on the water with the long awaited return of Di Jackson at the helm, back from her and Mark's overseas jaunt flouncing around the Caribbean on a 60 odd foot luxury yacht. All agreed, this was much nicer. Yeah, sure it was!

The first start of Race one had plenty of action, with Tasars, Taipans, A class cats, a Windrush as well as the Sharpie all bunched up on the start line. Someone beat the gun and had to come back but I didn't catch who it was. Just shows that every one was keen to get into it. The Div two start was similar, with finally a decent number of Sabres, some 420's and a Laser vying for pole position. With plenty of wind shifts, there were ample overtaking chances to be had, or not had depending on how you read them, but it all made for great fun.
Race two was much the same with slightly more breeze and a little more chop. No need to alter the course and we all got away clean- except Bill who buggered up his watch and missed the start entirely. Just when I was about to christen him The Gingerbread Man, because we can never catch him, there he was, stoney last! Duncan M got an excellent start until he fell foul of being Mr Nice Guy. He had kindly picked up Campbell Martin's whisker pole (the second one they had dropped in for the day!) and when he tried to tack, it got caught up in the main sheet, the thwart, his feet and probably tangled in his undies too just for good measure. Splash one for Bill, who gradually rounded up all the Sabres and Paul in his Laser. Ah well, we'll get him one day.

With two good races under our belt, we headed for home. Isn't it always the way that you get the best reaches heading back to the beach- a great way to finish the day. I want to say a huge thank you to our race team of Geoff and Deirdre on Start, Rick P and Rob C on Sutherland and Bruce M and Norm K on Woodsy. An extra special thanks to Norm who filled in literally at the last minute after I messed up the rostering.

A final shout out this week to Rob Campbell, our dedicated power boat manager, who by his own admission thinks we are all mad for not having an engine bolted to the back of our boats. On their way back to the marina, Woodsy broke a steering linkage and Rob had to sit on the floor and steer by pushing on the steering arm tiller style while Rick operated the throttle to shouts of " all ahead full" from Rob down in the engine room! Picture attached, hopefully.

That's all for this week Folks. Good luck to those going to Geelong and McCrae and don't forget Safety Beach Australia Day sailing starts at 11.00 o'clock, 10.57 first warning. Regular sailing Sunday at 2.00pm, 13.57first warning. See you there.

Cheers, Pete Chippy

Looking for Crew?

If you are short of crew, or a crew member looking to sail, please utilise the SBSC Crew Register on the website.  There are some new bios on there now with some good experience, so please check them out here and get them onboard!  Even if you take someone out with less experience but keen to learn – you never know where it may lead.  Our aim is to get as many boats as possible involved in racing, and encourage new people into sailing.

If they are not (yet) a member of SBSC, please direct them to the Sail Pass page on our website to register on the day they sail.  It is a simple online process, and they can have up to six (day) sail passes before joining the club.  The Sail Pass is important for them to be covered by Australia Sailing insurance.

Things to Note…

  • As per SI’s 11.1.3, skippers are reminded that boats not starting must keep clear of the starting line and the Martha Cove Channel. And a further reminder to please keep well clear of fixed Piles when rounding to avoid contact / damage to pile infrastructure.
  • Due to the long weekend, there is no Sunday race on Sunday 29 January 2023.
  • The Night Race (on the Summer Program) will not be going ahead on Friday 3 February 2023. There will still be the normal Twilight Pursuit race.
  • Good luck to the many SBSC boats competing in the Festival of Sails (Geelong) this weekend, including; Cirrus, E’toile, Friday Harbour, L’etoile, Maverick, Patriot, Scamp, Shimmer, Unprecedented, Vincitore. Have a great regatta and safe return.

Yowza,Yowza,Yowza!

What a great days sailing we had on Sunday! After the disappointment of last week, this week was one to really write home about. An early one o'clock start gave us the chance to run three races to catch up in the Club Championship series, so RO Geoff  (good to have you back on the water Geoff ) took full advantage of the 15 knot south west breeze and the lack of powerboats/jet skis to set a nice close to shore windward return course. That would be course one for those that read the course board on the back of the start boat. You guessed it folks- I didn't. As I crossed the finish line downwind, then turned back to say g'day to the race team I was surprised to be met with stoney silence, just a bit of guarded finger pointing from Deirdre. Was I in trouble for crossing back over the line while there were still boats finishing? Had I transgressed in some other way I didn't know about? Perhaps they just don't like me! All these things crossed my mind until Bill M pointed out that course one finish is through the bottom gate and upwind over the line. Ahh, of course! So round I went and over the line properly to be met with a small cheer and a loud shout of RTBO!!! Which in Geoff speak translates to "Read The Bloody Orders". Good advice for all.

Our fleet was a little small this week owing to a few families still being away after the nationals. Special mention to our younger members in the 420's who had the highest number of entries from a single club, with Kristen K and Jess L second on handicap and Nick M and Riley E third on handicap and eighth overall on yardstick. Fantastic effort in a national event, well done everyone.

While the fleet may have been small, those on the water all had a blast! The Cats were really zipping round the marks and Ewan C remarked afterwards, "That was the most fun you can have in public". He obviously didn't see Molly at the Elton John concert- but lets not go there! The wind was strong but by no means stable with some big lifts and knocks to move you up and drag you back again if you thought about it for too long and some of those bullets that came through really had you hanging on; Duncan M went swimming so many times I thought he might be having bladder problems!

Two races of windward / return and it was time for the rhib crews to move the marks again. This time for race three and some triangles- WooHoo, those reaches were what we were looking for!
The sun came out and the wind was just right to catch some waves and really fly, and those bullets were like hitting the Nitro button- pure magic!

A huge thank you to the race team this week for a really big effort. An early start, setting a start for the keelboats, three races with two courses and a few changes due to wind shifts- it doesn't get much bigger than that! This week saw the return of Geoff as RO as well as Super Deirdre and Alister M on Start with Bruce M and Simon H in Sutherland and Ross M and new recruit Con Kasiaras on Woodsy. Con comes to us via the Coast guard and expressed an interest in helping out on the rhibs. He's not a sailor but has many years of power boat experience and will be a great asset so please make him welcome.
Next week is back to our regular 2.00 pm start, 1.57 first warning and the weather is looking good, so as our old friend Molly would say, " Do yourself a favour!"

That's all for now, Cheers, Pete Chippy.

A Class Nationals

The nationals were hosted by Gippsland Lakes Sailing Club at Paynesville last week and SBSC were represented by four boats. Stuart and Dave in the Foiling division and Glenn and Ewan in the Classic (non-foiling) division. A total of 48 boats entered which was the highest number in quite a few years, good to see the class is growing! The race management and hospitality of the club was excellent and we got a full 12 races in over four days of sailing in a range of wind conditions. The persistent Easterlies stirred up a lot of weed though which played havoc with the foilers in particular. Obviously it was a star-studded line up of past Olympians and world champions plus also Paul Larson who still holds the world sailing speed record which he set on VESTAS Sail Rocket 2 about ten years ago. He was just back in Oz for a holiday and thought he’d charter a boat!
Not fazed by all the famous sailors Dave sailed a great regatta and came third, beating three-time world champion Steve Brewin in the process!
Stuart also had a great result coming 6th but unfortunately got a couple of holes in his boat courtesy of a pre-race T-bone, ouch! Glenn and Ewan traded blows at the back end of their division but learnt a lot while learning from the fleet and both managed a mid-fleet finish each. All results here
